UNILAG Mathematics Dept. Celebrates Dr Adeniyan @ 70

It was a deluge of encomiums, tributes and accolades in honour of Dr Adetunji Adeniyan of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, as he clocks septuagenarian age which also marks his formal exit from active service to the University.

Dr. Adeniyan’s 70th Birthday and Retirement celebrations held amidst pump and ceremonies at the Faculty of Science on Friday, December 2, 2022.

The ceremony which was graced by senior academics across departments from the faculties of Science and Engineering also recorded a remarkable presence of friends, old coursemates, mentees and students of the celebrant who all turned up to shower him with tributes.

In separate remarks, Chairman of the occasion, Professor Charles Uwadia, Professor Muminu Adamu who spoke on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, FAS, and the Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Elijah Oyeyemi alongside acting Head of the Mathematics Department, Dr Adesanmi Mogbademu took turns to congratulate Dr Adetunji Adeniyan on what they all described as a fulfilling career and impactful life.

The speakers acknowledged the celebrant for his humaneness, simplicity, astuteness, tenacity, resilience and fatherly role to everyone he came in contact with, not minding his personal challenges.

Other speakers at the well-attended event included the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, the first occupier of Pastor E. A. Adeboye Professorial Chair of Mathematics, University of Lagos and supervisor of the celebrant’s Ph.D. thesis, Professor Segun Okoya, Mr Adebisi Adeniran who has been friends with the celebrant for over five decades as well as an array of mentees.

They all described Dr Adeniyan as an enigma with a reputation of inspiration, benevolence, magnanimity, sacrifice, dedication, doggedness and compassion for everyone around him.

The 70th Birthday and Retirement celebrations of Dr Adetunji Adeniyan were commemorated with a Valedictory Lecture entitled “Non-Linearities and Methods of Mathematical Physics with Application to Nonlinear Dynamics of Pipes Conveying Two-Phase Flows” delivered by Professor Ayo Oyediran.

The lecturer who underscored the indispensability of Applied Mathematics in every field of human endeavour also took time to simplify the concept and applicability as well as demystify myths surrounding the concept.

Highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of gifts to the celebrant, Dr Adetunji Adeniyan to celebrate his over 40 years of service to the University of Lagos especially the Department of Mathematics, one which some of his mentees and admirers adjudged a journey of hardwork, dedication, mentorship and quality research.

In his response, the celebrant, Dr Adetunji Adeniyan was full of gratitude to the entire gathering for the honour. He was also grateful to successive managements of the University of Lagos, the Faculty of Science and the Department of Mathematics for the opportunity and ambience accorded him to pursue his career, mentor students and make his contributions to the body of knowledge especially in his chosen field of Mathematics.
