UNILAG VC vows to reinstate banned SUG

In a recent meeting with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, committed to reinstating the institution’s banned Students Union Government (SUG).

This assurance came following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by NANS, demanding the reinstatement.

During the visit, Ogunsola emphasised the recognition of the critical role that student governance plays in fostering a vibrant academic environment and ensuring student welfare.

She confirmed that steps are being taken to address outstanding issues and create an enabling environment for the SUG to operate effectively.

“The SUG will not only be reinstated but will also involve creating an environment where it can thrive and fulfill its mandate effectively,” stated Professor Ogunsola. She highlighted that the process is a collaborative effort requiring the support of all stakeholders to ensure its success.

The VC underscored the importance of a functional and responsible Students’ Union in promoting student welfare, enhancing campus life, and facilitating constructive engagement between students and the university administration. She reiterated the university management’s commitment to resolving any outstanding issues and supporting the SUG’s operations.

Oladiimeji Uthman, Senate Clerk of NANS, praised Professor Ogunsola’s commitment, noting that the suspension of the SUG had left a significant void in student representation, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among students.

Uthman commended the Vice Chancellor’s dedication to student welfare and campus democracy, viewing her actions as a testament to her commitment to fostering a strong relationship with NANS.

“Professor Ogunsola has initiated a series of consultations and dialogues with key stakeholders, including student representatives, university staff, and the university Governing Council,” Uthman remarked. “These discussions aim to address the root causes of the suspension and establish a framework to prevent future disruptions.”

He added that Ogunsola’s vision for the university includes a robust and functional SUG that serves as a bridge between students and the administration, ensuring prompt and effective resolution of student issues.

“The approach of the VC has been one of partnership and mutual respect, recognizing the valuable role that NANS plays in the broader context of Nigerian education,” Uthman concluded.

The reinstatement of the SUG is anticipated to significantly improve student representation and engagement at UNILAG, fostering a more inclusive and democratic campus environment.
