The University of Port Harcourt community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Miss Oluchi Okoh, a 22-year-old 300-level student of Economics, who lost her life in a fatal road accident in downtown Port Harcourt.
According to a statement by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, the accident occurred when a reckless commercial bus driver rammed into a stationary lorry, killing several passengers. Among the casualties was Miss Okoh, who died from severe injuries sustained in the collision.
“Gone too soon; sunset at noon,” Prof. Georgewill wrote, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “University of Port Harcourt mourns the passing of our 300 level student of Economics. A reckless driver in downtown Port Harcourt rammed his commercial bus into a stationary lorry killing some of the passengers. At the end of rescue operations, Miss Oluchi Okoh, a 22-year-old female student of the University of Port Harcourt, laid dead in a pool of blood from severe injuries sustained from the road traffic accident due to the reckless driver.”
A candlelight session was held on campus in her memory, where students, staff, and members of the university community gathered to pay tribute to the late student.
“The University mourned her death and consoles her colleagues and family for this sudden death and irreparable loss and pain due to this tragedy. May the soul of Oluchi rest in perfect peace,” the Vice Chancellor added.
The University has pledged to stand by the family during this difficult time and to advocate for safer road practices to prevent such tragic incidents.
