The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has imposed an indefinite ban on the popular final-year exam ritual known as “signing off” celebrations.
In a press release issued on Tuesday and signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, the directive takes immediate effect and prohibits all forms of orchestration associated with final-year examinations.
According to the statement, the decision was taken due to recurring cases of chaos, violence, and disruption of academic activities linked to the events.

“The university management wishes to inform you that, effective immediately, all forms of orchestration (‘signing off’) related to final examinations by final-year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the university premises. This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events,” the Registrar stated.

Okeke further explained that the presence of unauthorised individuals on campus had become a security threat to students, staff, and the wider community.
“Any student found involved in orchestration (‘signing off’) or related activities risks severe disciplinary measures, including rustication. Any outsiders entering the university premises to support such activities may face arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct and breach of peace,” the statement warned.
The ban highlights UNIZIK’s determination to restore order and ensure safety across the institution.
“We urge all students to focus on their academic responsibilities and report any instances of misconduct or threats to safety to the appropriate authorities,” Okeke added.
With this decisive step, the UNIZIK bans final-year exam ‘signing off’ celebrations policy reflects the university’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment that prioritises learning over disruptive traditions.
