Varsity seeks Babangida’s help for hostels

Former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has promised that in no distant time, shortage of hostel accommodation confronting the students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai in Niger State, will soon be a thing of the past.

The former leader made the promise when he received management of the institution, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Suleiman, who visited him at his residence in Minna on Thursday.

Babangida, while appreciating the Management of the University for the visit, prayed that the university would continue to grow stronger.
He said, “We will do our best to assist the University.”

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University lauded the elder statesman for the excellent services he has rendered to the country and humanity, especially at IBB University, Lapai.

Professor Hadi appreciated the former leader for the warm reception and hinted that the University was in dire need of more hostel accommodation, appealing to the elder statesman to come to the University’s rescue, using his immense influence.

He disclosed that another Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) hostel intervention to the tune of Three Billion, Eight Hundred Thousand naira was in the offing for the University.

Professor Hadi explained that the intervention involved the construction of both male and female hotels, each with three hundred rooms.

The Vice Chancellor briefed the former leader on the events of the past weeks in the University, which led to its closure.

He stressed that hostel accommodation has become a major nightmare for students, with over 19,000 students living off campus.

On the entourage of the Vice Chancellor were the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Muhammad Aliyu Bello; Registrar, Alhaji Idris Saleh Kusherki; and the University Librarian, Dr. Abubakar N. Usman.

Others were the Bursar, Alhaji Muhammad Alfa Daniyan and the Deputy Registrar, Information, Alhaji Baba Akote.

Prayers were offered for the life of the elder statesman, the University, Niger State, and Nigeria at large.
