Violence erupts at Ogun NANS, NAOSS Stakeholders’ meeting over election disagreement

Violence erupted during a stakeholders’ meeting held by the Nigerian Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) in Ogun state. The meeting was convened to discuss the possibility of holding another election, but it quickly turned chaotic as members disagreed over the issue.

Eyewitnesses reported that the meeting started off peacefully with the attendance of several members from both organizations. However, tensions rose when some members began to express their opposition to the proposed election. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in physical altercations with members throwing chairs and other objects at each other.

Several members were injured in the violence, with some sustaining serious injuries requiring medical attention. The violence continued for several minutes before law enforcement agents arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd.

A member of NANS who preferred to remain anonymous expressed disappointment over the incident, noting that the meeting was intended to be a peaceful forum to address issues affecting students in the state. Similarly, a representative of NAOSS condemned the violence and urged members to remain calm and peaceful.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident and has launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators of the violence. The command also called on members of both organizations to maintain the peace and avoid further altercation.

A side view of the scene.

The incident has sparked concerns among members of the public, who are calling on the leadership of both organizations to take urgent measures to address the underlying issues that led to the disagreement and prevent such incidents from happening again. It is a sad reminder of the need for peaceful and constructive dialogue to resolve differences in society.
