We need more support to close child education gap in Borno – SUBEB Boss

Borno State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has appealed for more interventions to address the education gap caused by over a decade of violent attacks, especially on schools.

 

Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Bulama Kagu, appealed on Tuesday in Maiduguri while receiving donations presented by Save the Children Nigeria. The international nonprofit had delivered a Jeep, set of computers and other education items to the state.

 

Kagu, while lauding the organisation for the  support to state’s education sector, urged other development partners to also lend their support to revamping education in Borno.

 

 

“This vehicle will help us in our monitoring operation, especially for schools in difficult terrain in northern Borno. This customised jeep is an addition to our ageing fleet of operational vehicles,” said Kagu.

 

In his remarks, Save the Children Director of Operations and Programmes/Team Lead, Borno Area Office, Tadicha Chachu-Deputy, said the organisation was also handing over the two years Early Recovery and Resilience Project to Borno State government.

 

He said the project which started in 2019 and ended 2022, was designed to increase access to save and quality education for children and adolescents.

 

“One of the project’s objective is to increase access to save, quality, inclusive primary and secondary education in formal and non-formal mode for both boys and girls,” he said.

 

Explaining further, he said the project targeted 8,000 people between ages six and 18, who were victims of displacement.

 

He said the organisation was glad to have started the project with the government and returned it successfully to same authority after two years of implementation.

 

The organisation also donated some items to the ministry of education through the permanent secretary.

 

Earlier in 2022, the United Nations Child Education Fund reported that an estimated 1.8 million children  are out-of-school in Borno State.
