The French government says it has begun training teachers in 10 public schools in Plateau.

The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Emanuelle Blatman, disclosed this during her visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau on Tuesday in Jos.

Blatman said the training was part of activities of a new project being implemented in five states in Nigeria.

‘’The idea is to support in Plateau State for two years in 10 pilot public schools that will benefit directly from an innovative programme involving teacher training in France and Nigeria,” she said.

She described the programme as innovative, which also involved the purchase of books for students and computer equipment, amongst others.

“One of the innovative aspects also is that it (the programme) will be working closely with a local radio in order to broadcast content in French and create educational programs for adults and children to be able to practice their listening skills,” she said.

The French ambassador sought the cooperation of the commissioners in charge of education at different levels in the state for its successful implementation.

She said the mission also sought more partnerships between French and Nigerian universities and other educational institutions in promoting the French language.

She described the language as an asset crucial to fostering trade and cultural relations within Africa and internationally.

The envoy added that the French government supported Nigeria in conducting research, of which the University of Jos and the National Veterinary Research Institute in Vom were beneficiaries.

On his part, Mr Mutfwang pledged his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the French Government toward the development of Plateau.

“Let me assure you that this administration will accelerate all areas of cooperation and collaboration between the Plateau State Government and the French government,” he said.

The governor also sought the French government’s cooperation in developing Plateau’s tourism sector.
