Global payment giant Mastercard has partnered with multi-category app Glovo to tackle hunger and promote education in underserved communities.
The collaboration aims to provide over 300,000 meals to school children in Nigeria and Kenya, marking a groundbreaking initiative in the fight against poverty, malnutrition, and inadequate learning.
In a demonstration of corporate social responsibility, Mastercard, a leader in the technology and payment industry, is leveraging its influence to empower individuals globally.
The strategic alliance with Glovo signifies a shared commitment to addressing hunger and ensuring access to nutritious meals for school children, creating an environment conducive to both learning and growth.
To amplify the impact of their initiative, Mastercard has forged partnerships with local charities, namely the Lagos Food Bank initiative in Nigeria and Food4Education in Kenya.
For every transaction made on the Glovo app, Mastercard will make donations to these charities, funding a meal for a child in need. This innovative approach is a pioneering effort in West and East Africa, showcasing Mastercard’s dedication to sustainable solutions that benefit people, the planet, and overall prosperity.
Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Manager and Area Business Head, West Africa at Mastercard, expressed the company’s broader mission, stating, “Our commitment is to set our cards apart by not only boosting consumers’ purchasing power but also delivering unmatched satisfaction. Our broader goal is to seamlessly foster positive impact, as exemplified by this joint effort with Glovo to eradicate hunger and foster an effective learning experience.”
Glovo, known for its pioneering app connecting consumers with various services, sees this collaboration as a testament to the power of local initiatives. Lamide Akinola, General Manager of Nigeria at Glovo, emphasized the significance of collective action in addressing specific challenges.
“Our collaboration with Mastercard represents a joint effort to address a specific challenge: the eradication of hunger and the promotion of equitable prosperity in Kenya and Nigeria,” Akinola said.
“Recognizing that social challenges require collective action, we understand that partnerships between businesses can lead to a more significant impact in local communities and inspire others to embark on similar projects.”
Beyond the provision of meals, the initiative aims to infuse hope and happiness into the lives of children in underserved areas. By creating a positive environment, Mastercard and Glovo aspire to have a lasting impact on the education and well-being of these children.
The collaboration underscores the importance of collective action in addressing societal challenges, inviting Mastercard cardholders to actively participate in this meaningful endeavour.
