President Bola Tinubu has named Aisha Garba, an accomplished international development expert, as the new Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Garba as a key figure in his administration’s vision for education reform.
“Aisha Garba’s appointment reflects this administration’s commitment to delivering quality education for all Nigerian children. We believe her extensive expertise will drive our renewed hope agenda and make Nigerian children globally competitive,” said Onanuga on behalf of the President.
Garba, a Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank, brings over 24 years of experience in spearheading transformative educational initiatives in Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Kenya, the USA, and the United Kingdom. Her hands-on experience at the World Bank spans more than 15 years, during which she has led the design, implementation, and evaluation of education programmes.
“She is uniquely positioned to tackle Nigeria’s educational challenges with her vast experience in fragile and conflict-affected regions. Her ability to connect governments, development partners, and communities will be invaluable,” Onanuga added.
Expressing confidence in her ability to reform Nigeria’s basic education system, Garba said, “Education is the foundation for human and economic development, and I am honored to take on this role at such a critical time. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure Nigerian children have access to quality education.”
Garba’s track record includes contributing to Nigeria’s success in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consulting for organizations like the World Bank, the Department for International Development (DFID), and Muslim Aid Organization.
A graduate of Petra American University in Jordan, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Computer Studies, Garba also holds a Master’s in International Development from the University of Birmingham, UK. Her diverse academic background and field expertise are expected to guide her in delivering sustainable solutions for the nation’s basic education challenges.
