BENIN CITY, EDO STATE – Governor Monday Okpebholo has inaugurated a specialised fleet of buses dedicated to the effective monitoring of Junior Secondary Schools across Edo State.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at New Era College in Benin City, also served as the launchpad for a massive state-wide distribution of teaching and learning materials.

Represented by his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the Governor emphasized that these interventions are part of a broader strategy to solidify Edo State’s position as a leader in educational development and human capital investment.

The deployment of the new monitoring buses is designed to enhance the supervisory capacity of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

By providing dedicated logistics for inspectors, the administration aims to ensure consistent academic standards, teacher attendance, and infrastructural maintenance across all three senatorial districts.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Friday Aghedo, highlighted that this mobility upgrade is a direct response to the need for effective monitoring to improve the overall quality of instruction in the state’s secondary education system.

The Governor officially flagged off the distribution of “Back to School” kits, a project born from the collaborative synergy between the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and SUBEB. The comprehensive packages include:

  • Academic Supplies: Textbooks and notebooks.

  • Uniforms & Apparel: School bags, sandals, and jerseys.

  • Extracurricular Tools: Sports equipment, including footballs.

Governor Okpebholo urged school administrators and students to ensure the materials are put to “good use,” noting that the provision of these items is intended to ease the financial burden on families while standardizing the learning experience.

Highlighting the administration’s achievements, the Governor revealed that no fewer than 5,009 teachers have been employed in less than two years. This aggressive recruitment drive was paired with a renewed focus on teacher welfare to ensure high morale within the workforce.

The Governor noted that these sustained efforts led to his recognition by New Telegraph as the 2025 Governor of the Year in Education. He commended the SUBEB Chairman, Sonia Ebanehita, for her unwavering commitment to the upliftment of the sector.

The event concluded with a symbolic handover of the buses and materials, signaling a new phase of administrative rigour in the Edo State education sector.
