In response to a violent clash between rival cults on the campus of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) that has led to the death of a student, the Abia State Government has taken swift action by deploying security operatives to maintain order and prevent further escalation.
During a press briefing in Umuahia, Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, confirmed the deployment, emphasizing the government’s commitment to proactively addressing the situation.
The clash, which reportedly led to the tragic loss of a student’s life on Monday afternoon, prompted the decisive intervention to ensure the safety of students and prevent any further breakdown of law and order within the university premises.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, highlighted the government’s anticipation of briefings from security agencies to gain clarity on the incident. Ekeoma urged students to refrain from activities that could exacerbate the already tense situation.
While addressing the security concerns at ABSU, the Commissioner for Information also provided updates on the state’s ongoing infrastructure projects.
He revealed that 27 road projects are currently underway across Abia State, with varying stages of completion. Emphasizing the administration’s commitment to robust infrastructure, the Commissioner underscored the importance of roads as catalysts for overall development.
Furthermore, the Commissioner disclosed the establishment of a Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation to ensure optimal use of resources in ongoing projects. This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to transparency and accountability in public expenditure.
Shifting focus, the Commissioner shared information about the upcoming medical mission organized by the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA).
Over 2500 patients have already registered for the free medical care provided by the ANPA team, with the exercise scheduled from April 4 to 14. The Commissioner encouraged residents facing serious health challenges to register for screening at designated centers in preparation for the medical mission.
The presence of Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Chinedu Ekeke, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Ugochukwu Okarafor, at the meeting underscored the government’s collective commitment to addressing both the security concerns at ABSU and broader developmental initiatives in the state.
