Afe Babalola advocates discipline as key to Nigeria’s transformation in education sector

The founder of Afe Babalola University, Afe Babalola, has advocated for discipline as key to Nigeria’s transformation in the education sector.

In a meeting with the Assistant Commandant-General (Training and Manpower Development) of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), David Abi, and his entourage, Afe Babalola, emphasised his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector. However, Babalola also identified indiscipline as the major problem currently plaguing the country, which has resulted in security challenges and hyperinflation, hindering national progress.

Despite facing financial limitations that prevented him from advancing beyond primary school, Babalola expressed his unwavering faith and determination to achieve desired results through hard work. ABUAD, which is a relatively young institution at just 13 years old, has surpassed expectations and attained remarkable success. Babalola attributed this achievement to the cooperation of dedicated teachers, supportive parents, disciplined students, and various stakeholders such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), the Council for Legal Education, and the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

Babalola highlighted the significance of both hard work and prayer, emphasising that they are synonymous in his view. He encouraged his students by stating that true prayer is accompanied by diligent effort, as praying without corresponding work would lead to starvation.

The NSCDC boss lauded Babalola for his versatility and praised his impactful contributions to Nigeria. Abi expressed his belief that with more individuals like Babalola and a collective commitment to diligent work, hunger could be eradicated from the country.

In response, ABUAD’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Smaranda Olarinde, extended an invitation to the NSCDC to explore the university’s facilities and opportunities for collaboration. This gesture demonstrates ABUAD’s commitment to fostering partnerships and utilizing its resources to contribute to national development.
