APEN webinar advocates emotional wellness for enhanced student success

The Association of Private Educators in Nigeria (APEN) hosted an event centered on the critical integration of emotional wellness into the learning environment.

Themed “The Role of Emotional Wellness in Learning,” the seminar spotlighted how fostering emotional health can significantly elevate student engagement, resilience, and academic performance.

Shakirah Olajobi, the keynote speaker, who is the Team Lead at The Neurobid and CEO of Brainy Educare as well as the Founding President of ANEP, delivered a compelling discourse on the necessity of emotional wellness in education.

Busayo Adeyemi, APEN Administrator, moderated the session, ensuring a seamless flow of insightful discussions.

The seminar commenced with an exploration of the three core domains of learning: Cognitive, Affective, and Psycho-motor. These domains capture the spectrum of children’s learning experiences, from perception and thought processes to speech and behaviour.

Olajobi emphasised that effective learning is deeply rooted in social-emotional development, including self-awareness and self-regulation, alongside cognitive skills like problem-solving and critical thinking.

A comprehensive definition of wellness was provided, encompassing physical, emotional, social, and mental health.

The seminar underscored the importance of a holistic approach, where the health of the body, mind, and soul are in harmony, forming the bedrock for effective educational development.

A key highlight of the seminar was the discussion on emotional health profound impact on learning outcomes. Olajobi elucidated that emotional health involves understanding and managing feelings and coping with challenges effectively.

She stressed that emotional wellness is crucial not just for adults but for children, significantly influencing their academic and life success. Resilience, positivity, affection, and curiosity were identified as essential elements contributing to a child’s well-being and educational achievements.

The seminar concluded with a robust call to action, urging educators and stakeholders to prioritise children’s mental health.

Emphasising that mental health should not merely be seen as the absence of illness, but as a positive state that empowers children to excel in their educational journeys and beyond, Olajobi’s message resonated with the attendees.
