Applications are open for the William P. Fuller Fellowship in Peacebuilding 2023. The evolving complexity of subnational conflict in the 21st century requires significant investment in an emerging generation of committed leaders to innovate and drive solutions for peace.

The William P. Fuller Fellowship in Peacebuilding is dedicated to the professional development of the next generation of leaders committed to addressing conflict and peacebuilding in Asia and the Pacific. Emphasis is placed on network-building between fellows and the global peacebuilding community to support and elevate the fellows’ development and work.

Program Structure

The program supports three fellows each year. The small cohort model supports the development of a professional network and close collaboration. The program is designed so that fellows may stay in their jobs but also gain in-depth skill-building, professional development, exposure, and support for their work.

Fuller Fellows are early or mid-career professionals (up to age 40) with demonstrated potential for leadership in peacebuilding who are actively working to promote peace through research, advocacy, policymaking, or other realms bridging knowledge and implementation.

Program Dates: In person October 9 to October 21, 2023, additional virtual seminar dates August to September 2023 (2-3 total)

Study Tour and Peacebuilding Exchange: 12 days in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C. area: The Study Tour and Peacebuilding Exchange is the heart of the program. Fellows gain exposure to leading peacebuilding experts, initiatives, and institutions—including NGOs, academic centers, and grassroots civil society groups.

Professional Development Award: A flexible $5,000 USD grant to support each fellow’s individually tailored project, advance professional goals, or further their work in the peacebuilding arena.

The money may be used toward an extended study tour for the purpose of consulting with specialists on a topic relevant to research; toward living and working or studying in a conflict-affected area for the purpose of analyzing a comparative context; a project aimed at subnational conflict; participation in an international conference such as the World Bank

Fragility Forum; a combination of the above. Foundation staff will work with fellows to hone project plans

Extended Learning Modules: A series of professional development activities complement the in-person Study Tour and Peacebuilding Exchange including:
Virtual seminars with The Asia Foundation’s Conflict and Fragility team
Leadership development support from LeadEx

Online coursework with the U.S. Institute of Peace, which offers a wide range of courses for peacebuilding practitioners and opportunities to earn professional certificates in areas of interest
