The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced the suspension of its planned industrial action. The union had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Nigerian government to suspend the implementation of a new scheme of work or face various forms of industrial action.
Following the ultimatum, the union’s leadership was invited to a tripartite meeting with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Federal Ministry of Education. At the meeting, it was agreed to suspend the implementation of the controversial document and initiate a review process in line with the union’s demands.
The NBTE promptly suspended the document through a circular to relevant authorities, and the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) held an emergency meeting to reassess their stance. They concluded that their demands had been substantially met and decided to suspend the planned industrial action.
ASUP expressed gratitude to its members for their steadfastness and acknowledged the support of various stakeholders, including Rectors of Polytechnics, sister staff unions, and students through the National Association of Polytechnic Students. The union now intends to focus on the upcoming review exercise to create a document that truly reflects the aspirations of the sector.
This development brings a temporary relief to the academic community as ASUP and the government work towards resolving their differences and improving the conditions in Nigerian polytechnics.
