The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has re-elected Emmanuel Osodeke as its national president for another two-year term (2023 -2025).
Members of the Union re-elected Osodeke as president and Chris Piwuna, an associate professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Jos, as vice president.
They were re-elected during the 22nd National Delegates Conference of ASUU, which was hosted by the University of Jos, Plateau State, between Friday, May 19, and Sunday, May 21, 2023.
Emmanuel Osodeke, a professor of Soil Science, at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, was first elected in May 2021, having taken over from Biodun Ogunyemi a professor of Education at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
Serving in his capacity as a leader, Osodeke has been at the forefront of the union’s struggles for better funding of the sector and treatment of its members. Also, under him, ASUU embarked on an eight-month strike in 2022 to demand more funding for universities in the country and improved welfare for lecturers.
Other ASUU National Officers re-elected during the conference include Prof. Siji Sowande as Treasurer, Prof. Ade Adejumo as Financial Secretary, Austen Sado, PhD, as Investment Secretary, Adamu Babayo, PhD, as Internal Auditor, and Aisha Bawa, PhD, who replaced Stella-Maris Okey, PhD, as Welfare Secretary.
