Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has allocated N1 billion towards the training of basic-level educators spanning across the state’s 27 local government areas.
The announcement was made by Governor Zulum during the inauguration of newly appointed local government education secretaries, tasked with overseeing primary education within their respective districts.
Highlighting the initiative’s aim to enhance teaching standards, Zulum revealed that over 1,000 educators holding O-Level certificates as their highest qualification will undergo specialized training to meet minimum teaching standards.
The training program extends to educators lacking formal teaching qualifications, identified as trainable through competency assessments. Zulum underscored his administration’s commitment to educational reconstruction, initiated upon assuming office in 2019, which has contributed to a notable decrease in the out-of-school population, reducing it from over two million to eight hundred thousand.
Addressing the newly appointed education secretaries, Zulum stressed accountability and performance, warning of swift replacements for underperforming individuals. He directed the Commissioner for Education to submit quarterly performance reports on each secretary, ensuring adherence to set expectations.
“In accepting this role, you inherit significant responsibility. I urge you to perform diligently. I have instructed the Honorable Commissioner for Education to provide regular updates on your performance. Failure to meet standards will result in immediate replacement,” emphasized Governor Zulum.
