Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum
Governor Banagana Zulum of Borno has approved an N80 million grant to Guwori Islamic Academy in the Jere Local Government Area of the state.
Zulum, who announced this on Sunday at the school’s graduation ceremony, said the gesture would enhance education opportunities for vulnerable children.
He said the money would be disbursed in instalments to support the provision of educational facilities, improve teachers’ welfare and provide an enabling teaching and learning environment.
“I am highly impressed with what I have seen here today. Students’ performance is quite encouraging; as a government, we are ready to support our children to receive good education (formal and non-formal).
“I, therefore, announced an N80 million grant to the school.
“Each year, we will release N20 million to complement payment of teachers’ salaries and other expenses.
“The first cheque of N20 million would be issued to the school management tomorrow (Monday),” he said.
Mr Zulum also doled out N4.1 million to 23 graduating students and 12 others who memorised the Qur’an.
He said each beneficiary would receive N250,000, while 11 others who completed their primary education but could not memorise the Qur’an would get N100,000 each.
The governor charged parents to inculcate good teachings of Islam in their children to enable them to become responsible members of society.
While reiterating commitment to infrastructure, and social and economic development, Zulum said his administration adopted proactive measures to combat crimes, and protect lives and property.
