Sadiya Sani-Daura, Director of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), has called for a significant shift in the approach to funding education in Nigeria. Speaking on Saturday in Kaduna, Ms. Sani-Daura emphasized the need to involve multiple stakeholders in financing the education sector.

“There is indeed the urgent need to diversify the sources of funding education in Nigeria,” she stated. According to her, the responsibility for funding education should not rest solely on the government.

“It isn’t the government alone that should fund education. In fact, even the teachers themselves have a critical role to play in terms of improvisation,” Ms. Sani-Daura explained. “There are so many things they can do once you are committed and when you have passion for what you do.”

Highlighting the critical role of education in driving national development, the NTI director underscored its interconnectedness with other sectors, including security, health, and the economy.

“We all know that we can use education to turn around the fortunes of the country. This is in so many areas like security, health, environment, and the economy itself, among others,” she said.

Ms. Sani-Daura also reaffirmed the institute’s dedication to enhancing teacher training nationwide. “We will sustain our various forms of training with a view to bolstering the capacities of the teachers. In line with our mandate, we will expand the centres of training to capture more teachers across the country,” she pledged.

The NTI, based in Kaduna, continues to play a pivotal role in improving the quality of education in Nigeria through innovative teacher training programs aimed at fostering excellence and global competitiveness.
