Education stakeholders in Gombe State have harped on the need for girls with disabilities to be enrolled into schools for their personal development and nation’s growth.

While speaking, Dr Amina Abdul, the Project Coordinator of Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment AF project, urged stakeholders to prioritise issues around girls, adding that it would ensure the required progress in the state and region as a whole.

Arewa PUNCH reports that Abdul made this plea during a one-day consultation with the Civil Society Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations saddled with the aim of improving the figure of disability inclusion in the project.

Arewa PUNCH further reports that AGILE is a World Bank initiative in collaboration with the Federal and Gombe State Ministry of Education.

The project has a target to mop out over 10,000 out-of-school children in Gombe State.

“AGILE will construct schools with conditions. If there is a community with primary schools and the students trek distances to attend secondary school, AGILE will build junior secondary school to ensure enrolment of girls, especially those with disabilities,” she said.

While explaining what AGILE is doing to mitigate menstrual poverty, Abdul disclosed that the project would explore collaboration with CSOs and NGOs into making sanitary pads available.

She added, “AGILE is on track. Provision of sanitary pads by AGILE will not be sustainable. But we will partner with NGOs on how to ensure girls get sanitary pads, especially reusable ones. AGILE has zero tolerance on gender-based violence. We usually give orientation to even our vendors.”
