Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, has been appointed as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of West Midlands Open University, Ibadan.
His inauguration was accompanied by other council members, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Olumide Babatope Longe, Senate Representative Air Commodore (Dr.) Akeem Adebomehin, Convocation Representative Prof. Adenike Osofisan, and representatives from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the university’s administration.
Speaking after the inauguration, Olayinka emphasized the need to tackle Nigeria’s high illiteracy rates, especially in rural areas. “Distance learning is not new to Nigeria; it dates back to the 19th century,” he said. “Modern technology has now made it more effective and widespread. By providing flexible and accessible education options, we can significantly reduce the illiteracy burden and empower unreached populations.”
Vice Chancellor Prof. Longe reaffirmed the university’s commitment to delivering quality education tailored to societal needs. “Our mission is to offer high-quality, affordable, and impactful learning programmes that contribute to Nigeria’s socio-economic and technological advancement,” he stated. “West Midlands Open University is here to redefine education, providing lifelong learning opportunities that empower individuals and transform communities.”
The institution’s founder, Oba Adebayo Akande, the Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadanland, also expressed his vision for the university. He described it as a hub for nurturing future leaders and fostering academic excellence. “This university is a beacon of hope for education in Nigeria,” he said, offering prayers for the success of the newly inaugurated governing council.
With its focus on distance learning and lifelong education, the university is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s educational landscape.
