In its determination to address the electricity crisis in tertiary institutions across the country, the federal government has begun the construction of 5KV solar power system at the Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Adamawa State capital.
The Vice Chancellor, professor Ibrahim Umar, disclosed this on Friday in his office when his year 89 set course mates in the University of Maiduguri paid him a visit.
He said that the university paid a bill of N850 million annually out of the N1.2 billion annual allocation, describing the situation as unacceptable and that it hindered the development of the institution.
“The electricity project will be completed and commissioned by April or the first week of May, according to the contractor,” he said.
Umar further disclosed that after the completion of the project, the university will be supplying electricity to it host communities.
Umar added, “Even when students were on holidays, we received a bill of N62 million per month. It is not possible to run a university under such circumstances, but we thank the federal government for coming to rescue us,”.
He pointed out that under his leadership of less than six months, he established three new faculties, and three others were accredited by the National University Commission.
“I established the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Computing Science, where we have computer engineering, data science AI science, and other courses,” he disclosed.
The vice chancellor stressed that under his leadership, the NUC approved the Faculty of Law for 25/26 academic session, Faculty of Medicine for the 25/26 academic session and that the university has introduced a degree programme in forensic sciences, which is the first in the north.
Umar, therefore, appealed to the Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is a member of the 89 set to always assist the university to move forward.
Several of the speakers at the occasion hailed the appointment of the vice chancellor and his achievements so far at the MAU, Yola, even as they equally lauded the victory of the election of the vice president who is one of their course mates, and urged the duo to strive to proudly represent the 89 set with dignity and hard work.
