University of Ibadan students take to the streets to voice their dissatisfaction with the ongoing electricity rationing and recent hike in school fees.
The protest, which began in the late hours of the night, continues as students wear masks to protect themselves from potential repercussions.
In an interview with Osun Defender, an anonymous student reveals that the protest has been ongoing since yesterday and students are adamant about not allowing videos or pictures to be taken, fearing retribution from the school management.
Confirming the peaceful demonstration, Comrade Adeyeye Olorunfemi emphasizes the students’ determination to stand united within the university premises.
He mentions that there are no classes or transportation on July 17, 2024, and that the Students’ Union will provide resources such as Aluta buses and a public address system to mobilize students.
The purpose of the protest is to express grievances regarding the school management’s memo on electricity rationing and to demand a retraction of the memo, as well as consistent power supply.
The students also demand a complete reversal of the recently increased school fees, with refunds for those who have already paid. Additionally, they condemn the victimization of the Dean of Students’ Affairs, who participated in a peaceful protest on May 13.
