The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU) has raised alarm over a protracted power outage plaguing the institution.
In a statement released on Thursday, Peter Adamu, the chairman of the KASU chapter, called for immediate government intervention to resolve the ongoing crisis.
KASU, a reputable educational institution in the state, has been grappling with a severe power outage that has persisted for months, leading to a complete system breakdown.
What initially began as intermittent and erratic power supply eventually escalated into an extended blackout, with the Kafanchan campus enduring seven months of darkness and the main campus struggling with a month-long power outage.
The situation has sparked deep concern and discussions among both staff and students.
Worries about academic stagnation and a bleak future are becoming more prevalent as the crisis shows no signs of abating.
Adamu, in his statement, expressed the growing pessimism, hopelessness, despair, and dissent among the university community.
He emphasised that urgent action is needed to prevent a potential academic disaster.
ASUU, KASU chapter, being deeply invested in the institution’s progress, initially engaged in informal discussions with the university’s management and concerned parties to address the issue.
The magnitude of the crisis has, however, prompted the union to speak out and fulfill its moral obligation to the university.
The dire situation in the university’s hostels, devoid of electricity and water, has added to the misery.
This has also disrupted the academic calendar, with examinations unable to commence as scheduled due to the lack of power for printing exam materials and other essential activities.
Adamu highlighted that office work had become virtually impossible, forcing staff to work from home in search of stable electricity.
The deteriorating conditions have led to reduced productivity among both staff and students.
ASUU, as a union dedicated to the welfare of university staff and students, expressed its concern over the deplorable state of KASU.
They urged the university’s management to take swift action to rectify the issue, emphasising that further delay could result in significant embarrassment and a potential reversal of the university’s years of progress.
In a final plea, Adamu called on the Kaduna state government to intervene promptly and rescue the beleaguered institution from the grip of this prolonged power crisis.
The future of KASU’s academic community hangs in the balance, and immediate action is required to restore normalcy and preserve the legacy of the university.
