The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, has issued a stern warning to students engaging in anti-social behavior, particularly indecent dressing, as part of efforts to maintain high moral and academic standards.
Speaking during the matriculation ceremony for 4,781 newly admitted students, including 4,600 undergraduates, 150 Continuing Education students, and 31 postgraduates, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, emphasized the institution’s commitment to fostering decency and moral decorum.
“The Senate has resolved to introduce stringent sanctions for students found guilty of violating the university’s moral code. MOUAU is a community of character and learning, not a society for rascals or a haven for prostitution,” he declared.
Professor Iwe urged students to embrace modesty in their dressing and warned against cultism and examination malpractice. He added, “We are dedicated to shaping individuals who are exemplary in both character and academics.”
The VC also encouraged students to take advantage of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), a Federal Government initiative designed to assist with academic expenses. He assured that fresh students would be eligible for the loan after completing their first year.
Professor Iwe’s address underscored the institution’s zero tolerance for behavior that undermines its core values, setting a clear tone for the academic journey of the new intakes.
