The National Association of Nigeria Students has called on the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria Nsuka and the Federal Ministry of Education to restore the institution’s accountability and ensure that students receive the quality education they deserve.
NANS, in a statement on Thursday by its Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, also supported the Governing Council to set up a committee to probe allegations against the Registrar by the students.
Akinteye said one of the allegations was a deliberate delay in fumigating the university’s 27 hostels, despite severe pest infestations.
He explained that the acting Vice-Chancellor, upon assumption of office, prioritised students’ welfare and secured necessary approvals from the Pro-Chancellor and the university’s Management Tenders’ Board on October 28, 2024, to carry out the fumigation.
“One of the most alarming instances of this sabotage is the deliberate delay in fumigating the university’s 27 hostels, despite severe pest infestations, including bedbugs, rats, mosquitoes, and even snakes, posing serious health risks to students.
“Unnecessary delays forced students to endure unhygienic and unsafe conditions for months before the fumigation finally commenced in January 2025.
“We align with the decision of the UNN Governing Council to set up a committee to investigate these disturbing developments and stand firmly with the Council Chairman, recognising his integrity and commitment to the proper administration of the university.
“Furthermore, as students from the UNN campus have reached out to us, urging fairness in this matter, we strongly advise the council to ensure that justice is done.
“NANS therefore urges the Governing Council, the Federal Ministry of Education, and all other relevant authorities to act swiftly to restore accountability and ensure that students receive the quality education and welfare they deserve.
“The UNN is an institution of national pride, and we will not stand by while its progress is derailed by administrative misconduct,” he insisted.
