A total of 16,614 aspiring teachers nationwide have taken the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria’s (TRCN) Batch ‘B’ Professional Qualifying Examination, marking a crucial step toward professional certification. The exams were held across multiple centers, with TRCN acting registrar, Stella Nwokeocha, overseeing the process in Abuja and affirming its success.
According to Ms. Nwokeocha, the examination proceeded smoothly across the country, reflecting improvements in the council’s processes.
“The process has been smooth nationwide,” she noted, expressing satisfaction with the coordination. However, she stressed that any form of malpractice would not be tolerated, warning, “Any candidates caught engaging in malpractice would be stopped from continuing the exam.”
During the event, Ms. Nwokeocha also appealed to the government to reconsider its current policy of non-funding the TRCN. She emphasized that government support, particularly in paying workers’ salaries, would strengthen the council’s operations.
Representing the Federal Ministry of Education, Abubakar Isah, the director of ICT, commended the TRCN for a seamless examination. Mr. Isah attended on behalf of the permanent secretary, Nasiru Sani-Gwarzo, and praised the council’s efforts to maintain high standards in the certification process.
Further enhancing the credibility of the exam, Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, TRCN’s director of certification and licensing, highlighted the council’s adoption of a new app designed to detect impersonation during candidate accreditation.
“An app to detect impersonation has been introduced for accreditation purposes,” she stated.
Ms. Ezeahurukwe also shared updates on TRCN transition to a fully digital system, emphasizing automation in candidate registration.
“In the past, we manually assigned numbers to candidates, but now the process is automated, with the computer generating candidates’ numbers,” she explained, pointing to ongoing improvements in the council’s operations.
The TRCN advancements, combined with appeals for additional government support, reflect the council’s commitment to strengthening the teaching profession in Nigeria.
