The Rotary Club of Abuja, Kubwa (RCAK), District 9127, has announced its plan to sponsor 30 out-of-school children in Abuja.
The initiative, which includes covering their school fees and providing essential academic supplies, was unveiled by Olayemi Idowu during her investiture as the 10th President of RCAK.
During the ceremony held in Abuja, Idowu emphasized the importance of this initiative in reducing the number of children roaming the streets of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“We are going to sponsor 30 out-of-school children; we will bring them back to school,” she declared, highlighting that the support will include not only school fees but also basic needs such as school bags, sandals, and writing materials.
In addition to the educational initiative, Idowu addressed pressing health concerns, urging the government to increase investment in the healthcare sector, particularly at the grassroots level.
She pointed out the challenges faced by many families, stating, “There is poverty in the land, and most people at the grassroots cannot afford basic healthcare.”
The Rotary Club aims to collaborate with government bodies to enhance conflict prevention and resolution, partnering with security agencies to foster community safety and well-being. Idowu outlined her focus areas for her tenure, which include maternal and child health and basic literacy programmes.
“We will assist pregnant women in our adopted community with birthing kits and mosquito nets, among other initiatives,” she added.
During her address, Idowu also commented on the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, encouraging the youth to adopt dialogue as a means of enacting change rather than resorting to protests. “Protest is not the solution to the issues they are protesting against,” she advised.
Emmanuel David, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, echoed Idowu’s sentiments, emphasizing that the club would undertake projects aimed at positively impacting the lives of the host community.
Outgoing president, Emmanuel Abonta, reflected on the club’s achievements despite economic challenges, noting projects such as the construction of a traffic post and road rehabilitation at Aso Savings junction in Kubwa.
The event also recognized outstanding individuals in humanitarian service with awards of excellence. Notable awardees included John Gabaya, Chairman of Bwari Area Council; Chief Sheriff Agbebaku, Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly; and Sen. Philip Aduda, former Senate Minority Leader.
Gabaya thanked RCAK for its contributions to humanitarian efforts in Bwari Area Council and pledged continued support for the club’s initiatives.
