STEAM Fun Fest 2023 took centre stage, Saturday, inspiring adventure, innovation, and creativity among children, urging them to harness the power of science and technology in the ever-evolving education landscape. The theme of the festival was “Empowering the Next Generation for the Future of Work.”
The event aimed to equip every child with essential digital skills necessary for the future while ensuring a fun and engaging learning experience. Students from various schools in Lagos flocked to the festival with their parents and teachers. This year’s festival introduced two exciting competitions, namely ESPORTS and STEAM competitions, offering students a chance to win various cash and gift prizes.
The organisers, 9ijakids, STEM METS, Edufun Technik Hub, and SabiTeach, expressed their commitment to equip Nigerian children with up-to-date skills and knowledge relevant to thrive in the 21st-century workforce and the rapidly advancing world of technology.
During the Empower the Future Females panel discussion, parents were urged to empower their daughters by providing constant motivation and encouraging them to embrace technology and digital tools without discouragement. Folusho Gbadamosi, executive director, Junior Achievement Nigeria,, highlighted the importance of exposing girls to tech trends, emphasising that they can achieve more than ever before.
In the context of financial literacy, Mary Ojulari, managing director, Weststars Associates limited, stressed the significance of using games and investment apps to teach children about savings and financial concepts. Adeolu Adewumi Zer, Global Advisor and Change leader, emphasised that financial literacy is vital for all children, regardless of gender, likening its importance to reading and writing.
Oreoluwa Lesi, founder WTEC has encouraged parents to use uplifting words when speaking to their daughters and to avoid discouraging language, fostering a positive environment for their growth.
The STEAM presentations by school children impressed parents and guardians as the pupils showcased their innovations, which were assessed by a panel of judges.
The panelists discussed the role of technology in the business sector, emphasising its significance and encouraging its widespread adoption, particularly in schools. Ope Bukola, founder of Kibo School highlighted that technology is at the core of all aspects of life, including education, but also stressed that physical schools should not be entirely replaced by online schools.
Oklae Enahoro, chief executive officer of Pause Factory and GIGM, emphasised the importance of embracing digital tools in today’s world. Teachers and parents were encouraged to support and motivate girls to pursue tech opportunities, avoiding discouragement.
In the master session on exploring technology’s role in the creative sector, the panellists highlighted the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, marketing strategies, and animation on the creative world.
Overall, STEAM Fun Fest 2023 was a resounding success, providing a platform for children to acquire essential digital skills while enjoying a fun-filled learning experience. The event’s emphasis on empowering the next generation for the future of work showcased the dedication of the organisers and participants to prepare Nigerian children for a rapidly evolving world driven by technology and innovation.
