In a significant address at the 12th Leadership Lecture Series organized by the Centre for Leadership and Complex Military Operations at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Abuja, the secretary to the government of the federation, George Akume, emphasized that impactful development, particularly in education, stands as a pivotal solution to Nigeria’s enduring security challenges.
Represented by retired federal permanent secretary Olusegun Adekunle, Akume delivered a paper titled “Leadership, Policy Implementation, and Development in Nigeria.”
He highlighted the profound connection between leadership, policy implementation, development, and the prevailing security situation in the country.
Akume asserted, “By investing in impactful development strategies, our country, Nigeria, can address root causes of insecurity and mitigate the risks of conflicts and security challenges, thereby creating environments conducive to peace and stability.”
Drawing attention to Nigeria’s decade-long struggle with security challenges, Akume emphasized that fostering significant development in sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities could markedly enhance security conditions.
He further stated that initiatives such as job creation, entrepreneurship programs, and investments in industries could play a pivotal role in alleviating poverty, reducing inequality, and consequently minimizing social unrest, crime, and extremist ideologies driven by economic desperation.
Moreover, Akume highlighted the positive impact of development projects in enhancing social cohesion, promoting dialogue, and addressing grievances by fostering inclusive societies where citizens have equal opportunities and feel represented.
Strengthening governance systems was also underscored as a crucial factor in preventing corruption, promoting the rule of law, ensuring equal access to justice, and building robust institutions that maintain security and stability, according to Akume.
Commending the administration of President Bola Tinubu, Akume noted that, six months into its tenure, strategic steps have been taken on eight priority areas. These encompass food security, ending poverty, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, and inclusivity.
The Director of the Centre for Leadership and Complex Military Operations, NDA, Bem Audu, remarked that the lecture series aims to align with practical leadership concepts, signaling a concerted effort to integrate leadership, policy, and development for the nation’s growth and stability.
