Teacher abducted with 137 schoolchildren in Kaduna dies in kidnappers’ den — Governor reveals

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State disclosed that amidst the relief of the release of 137 kidnapped schoolchildren from Government Secondary and Primary Schools, Kuriga 1, Chikun LGA, one individual did not survive the harrowing ordeal.

The announcement came following an earlier announcement of the children’s rescue by the state government and the Defence Headquarters.

The abduction, which occurred on March 7, 2024, sent shockwaves through the nation, triggering a widespread search and rescue operation. Fortunately, the efforts bore fruit as the children were found and rescued in Zamfara State, bringing hope and relief to their families and the community.

However, the joyous occasion was marred by tragedy as Governor Sani revealed in an interview with Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme that one teacher, who was abducted alongside the children, succumbed to complications while in captivity.

Despite the concerted efforts to ensure the safe return of all involved, the teacher’s health deteriorated, ultimately leading to a heartbreaking outcome.

Governor Sani expressed the collective sorrow of the state, acknowledging the loss while reaffirming the safety of the rescued children.

“Sadly, one person has not returned, and that is the teacher,” he stated solemnly. “That is the fact of the matter, but all the 137 children are safely back.”

The governor elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the teacher’s passing, citing reports from the military indicating health complications. Despite the tragic loss, Governor Sani emphasized the importance of the successful rescue mission, highlighting the resilience and determination of the state’s security forces.
