The University of Benin has officially announced the resumption of academic activities following a period of closure that began on 4 July 2024
This was disclosed in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the decision was reached after a series of senate meetings held on 23 and 24 July 2024, where the underlying issues that led to the shutdown were thoroughly reviewed.
The closure was initially prompted by a wave of student protests and agitations against the directives of the university authorities, which severely disrupted both academic and administrative operations.
During the period of closure, the university management undertook significant measures to address the primary concerns raised by the students.
These measures included resolving issues related to electricity and water supply, as well as the renovation of the halls of residence.
In alignment with the positions of the Governing Council, Senate, and other critical stakeholders, and after careful consideration of the current national climate, the University Management has made the following decisions:
Resumption of Students: Students are to return to the Halls of Residence on Sunday, 11 August 2024.
Commencement of Lectures: Lectures will resume on Monday, 12 August 2024.
Affidavit of Undertaking: Each returning student must swear to an Affidavit of Undertaking to adhere to good conduct while at the University. This affidavit should include key points outlined in the attached document. Students are required to upload the sworn affidavit on their Kofa page and submit a hard copy to their Departmental Course Adviser.
This process must be completed within two weeks of resumption, and no later than the end of the 2023/2024 academic session. Failure to comply will result in the withholding of the student’s results.
The registrar, A.A. Bobola, emphasized the importance of these new regulations and urged all students to take note and comply accordingly.
