The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced a record-breaking achievement as 385 students will graduate with first-class honours in the combined 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic sessions.
This prestigious celebration will take place at UNIBEN’s 49th/50th convocation ceremonies, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday.
The impressive accomplishment was confirmed by UNIBEN’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, marking her tenure as she prepares to hand over to Prof. Edoba Omoregie, SAN, on December 1. “This remarkable achievement is a testament to the collective efforts of our management, faculty, and the relentless commitment of our students,” Prof. Salami stated, applauding the dedication that fueled these academic successes.
In the 2021/2022 academic session, 206 students achieved first-class honors, followed by 179 students in the 2022/2023 session. Prof. Salami emphasized the institution’s unwavering support for academic excellence, crediting the synergy among faculty, staff, and students for this milestone.
The convocation ceremonies will kick off on Thursday, November 21, with an interfaith service, followed by the annual convocation and Founders’ Day lecture.
The lecture, titled “The Poor also Deserve Education: Our Founding Heroes’ Legacies in Educational Equity and Equality,” will be delivered by former Ondo State Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.
“On Friday, 22nd November, the award of first degrees and prizes shall commence at 10 a.m.,” Prof. Salami continued, “while on Saturday, 23rd November, the convocation shall climax with the award of Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters, PhDs, and the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and Professors Emeriti on selected honorees.”
Among the honorees, Chief Leemon Ikpea, Dr. Kingsley Momodu, and Mrs. Veronica Igbe will receive Honorary Doctorate Degrees, as approved by the university’s Senate. In addition, seven distinguished professors, including Nosakhare Eghafona, Felix Okeimen, and Patrick Igbinovia, will be awarded the title of professors emeriti for their lifelong contributions to the institution.
