In a bold move to mark its 50th anniversary, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has unveiled plans to enhance its sports and recreational facilities ahead of hosting the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in 2026.
The announcement was made by UNICAL Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, during the flag-off ceremony of the institution’s anniversary celebrations, “UNICAL @50.”
Prof. Obi revealed that the upgraded facilities will be key to ensuring the university successfully hosts NUGA for the first time in over three decades. “The development of sports and recreational facilities is one of the major objectives of our 50th-anniversary celebrations,” she said. “UNICAL was granted the hosting rights after 33 years, and we are committed to making this a remarkable event.”
Beyond sports infrastructure, Prof. Obi highlighted additional milestones the university plans to achieve as part of its golden jubilee. These include the commencement of foundation work for a new Senate building, designed to reflect the university’s status as a prominent second-generation institution, and the construction of a convocation arena to host academic ceremonies.
Reflecting on the university’s growth since its establishment in 1975, Prof. Obi noted that UNICAL has expanded from a modest student body of 406 to a thriving community of over 40,000 students and 80,000 staff members.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the university will also honor distinguished alumni, academic and non-teaching staff, and principal officers who have contributed significantly to its development over the years. Prof. Obi emphasized, “This is a time to celebrate not only the university’s progress but also those who have supported its journey.”
