The University of Uyo (UNIUYO) in Akwa Ibom is gearing up to honour the academic achievements of its students and faculty at a grand convocation ceremony this Saturday.
A remarkable 174 students will be awarded first-class honours, highlighting the institution’s commitment to educational excellence.
Speaking at a press conference in Uyo, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo announced, “The university will be graduating a total of 12,450 students during the ceremony.” The breakdown includes 1,167 postgraduate degrees, 10,835 bachelor’s degrees, 411 diplomas, and 37 certificates.
Reflecting on the university’s impressive academic record, Prof. Ndaeyo noted, “In the 2020/2021 academic session, we produced 56 first-class graduates. Let me also inform that in the 2021/2022 session, the university produced a total of 118 first-class graduates,” showcasing a consistent rise in academic performance.
The university currently runs 100 programs across 117 departments within 19 faculties, with 90% of these programs fully accredited by the National Universities Commission.
Prof. Ndaeyo emphasized the institution’s dedication to student welfare and motivation, stating, “We have entered into a public-private partnership agreement for the building and equipping of more hostels for our students.”
In addition to student achievements, UNIUYO will also recognize distinguished individuals with honorary doctoral degrees. Among the honorees are Chief Effiong Afiakurue, Mrs. Halima Zakari, and Dr. Itanwan James. Moreover, former Vice Chancellor Prof. Akpan Ekpo will be conferred with the prestigious title of Honorary Professor Emeritus.
Despite these achievements, Prof. Ndaeyo acknowledged ongoing challenges such as insecurity, inadequate funding, manpower shortages, and land encroachment. Yet, the university remains committed to overcoming these hurdles to maintain its standard of excellence.
