WAEC appoints Prof Yormah as new council chairman

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Prof. Thomas Brima Rick Yormah as its 21st Chairman of Council, succeeding Prof. Ato Essuman from the Republic of Ghana.

The announcement was made by Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC headquarters in Accra, Ghana, during the 72nd Annual Council Meeting held over the weekend.

Prof. Yormah’s election took place during a week-long WAEC Council meeting convened in the Republic of Sierra Leone.

The gathering was inaugurated by Sierra Leonian President Julius Maada Bio, represented by his vice, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, who extended congratulations to WAEC on its 72nd anniversary.

President Bio lauded the council for its pivotal role in the educational advancement of the sub-region and commended its contributions to educational reforms across member countries.

Echoing President Bio’s sentiments, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, emphasized WAEC’s indispensable contribution since its establishment in 1952.

He praised WAEC for promoting quality education and upholding educational standards, underscoring its role in shaping the aspirations of the sub-region’s populace beyond mere examination outcomes.

Minister Sackey lauded WAEC’s enduring relevance over seven decades and urged stakeholders to collaborate in eradicating examination malpractice across member countries.

During the event, WAEC conferred the prestigious WAEC International Excellence Award upon three Ghanaian candidates in recognition of their exceptional performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in 2023.
