Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has been named the “Best Tertiary Tourism Institution in Lagos” at the prestigious Destination Lagos Awards 2024. The event, organized by Eko Destination and supported by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, celebrated achievements in Lagos State’s tourism sector.

YABATECH triumphed over top institutions like Lagos State University (LASU), University of Lagos (UNILAG), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) for its exceptional contributions to tourism education.

In his address, the Chairman of the College’s Governing Council, Professor ‘Funso Isola-Owa Afolabi, expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized YABATECH’s ongoing role in shaping the future of tourism in Lagos and beyond. “What we are doing today is part of a larger journey to equip our students, staff, and stakeholders to make meaningful contributions in their respective domains,” Afolabi said, underscoring the college’s commitment to developing future leaders in tourism.

Afolabi highlighted the significant impact of YABATECH’s specialized departments, such as the Department of Tourism Technology Management and the Department of Hospitality and Leisure Studies. These departments have played a key role in producing industry-ready graduates and fostering sustainable tourism practices. He also mentioned the college’s initiatives, including seminars, workshops, and the annual YABATECH Tourism Week, which helps students stay aligned with global trends.

Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon, CEO and Chairman of Eko Destination, praised YABATECH for its dedication to tourism education. “YABATECH’s contributions to Lagos State’s tourism development are exemplary. This award is a testament to its commitment and hard work,” he said. Nunayon also noted that the college’s integration of education with industry engagement has significantly boosted Lagos’ status as a world-class tourism destination.

The recognition of YABATECH as the Best Tertiary Tourism Institution is seen as a call for other institutions to follow its lead in prioritizing innovation and excellence. As Lagos continues to grow into a global tourism hub, YABATECH’s role in shaping the industry’s future remains vital. “This award underscores YABATECH’s enduring legacy as a leader in tourism education,” Nunayon concluded.
