Mohammed, son of the late human rights activist, Gani Fawehinmi, has urged students of the Lagos State University to adopt the “intellectual approach” to compel the state government to reduce the high tuition fees demanded in the institution.

This came as he described the fees as “very unreasonable”.

Fresh students in the university now pay between N193,000 and N350,000 per academic session. Before now, the fee was N25,000.

Mohammed, who spoke on Monday at his Ikeja residence when some students of the university visited him, said he would be in the forefront of any “peaceful struggle” seeking to reverse the fees.

He said, “This is three years after the fees were introduced. What you were afraid that Governor Babatunde Fashola was going to do, he has done it. Now you just have to adopt the intellectual approach. Seal your gates. Everybody from each department should make it clear that you can no longer afford it.

“As students you must take your destiny into your hands. Go on a peaceful protest; do it in your school grounds; boycott lectures. Those of you that are training to be lawyers should do communiqués. Go to Fashola and tell him you want to see him. If he avoids you, request to see the Attorney-General of the state and hand him your protest letters.”

Urging the governor to reduce the tuition, Mohammed said it would make some students not to actualise their educational goals.

According to him, with between N14bn and 16bn monthly internally generated revenue, the state has enough to subsidise university education.
