Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), located in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria, is one of the country’s notable higher education institutions. Established to provide quality education and foster academic excellence, OOU has grown over the years in terms of infrastructure, academic programmes, and student population.
1. Olabisi Onabanjo University was originally known as Ogun State University (OSU)
2. It was founded on 7th July 1982.
3. It was renamed in 2001 in honour of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, the first civilian governor of Ogun State, who was instrumental in the establishment of the university.
4. On Tuesday, 28th September 1982, the appointment of the pioneer Chairman of Council, the first Vice-Chancellor and other members of the Provisional Council was announced.
5. The institution was created after the Civilian Government then expressed its desire and determination to establish more Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and a University for the State during its first term in office.
6. The University was designed as a multi-campus institution and the main campus of OOU is situated in Ago-Iwoye, a town in Ogun State.
7. The university also has the Ago-Iwoye Campus, Ikenne Campus, Shagamu Campus, Ayetoro Campus, and Ibogun Campus.
8. The University opened its doors to its first set of students, numbering a little over 500 in all on Monday, 31st January, 1983.
9. The University held its first convocation ceremony on Friday, 30th January, 1987.
10. Many students still refer to the institution as OSU, an acronym for the former name.
11. The University has an e-library.
12. Prof. John Olubi Sodipo was the first Vice Chancellor of the university.
13. The current Vice-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State is Professor Agboola Ayodeji.
14. The university has seven departments and three colleges.
15. The university has greatly contributed to the development of the primary local government of Ago-Iwoye.
