The Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State, has unveiled a project, a surveillance drone built to curb insecurity within the school premises.
The rector of the institution, Michael Arimanwa, disclosed this while speaking to journalists on the achievements of the polytechnic on his four years anniversary.
The rector revealed that the surveillance drone was programmed to detect people’s conversations.
The rector disclosed the project is another impact recorded by the institution, with the prospect of providing a solution to man’s existing problems.
Arimanwa said that the invention of the drone became important because of the rising insecurity in the country.
He also said that the polytechnic had provided Closed Circuit Television cameras at strategic locations on campus and strengthened the Man O’War and other internal security outfits in the institution.
The rector also disclosed that the school had established collaborations with a vigilance group to combat any infraction in and around the polytechnic’s environment.
He further disclosed that a total sum of N400m provided by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund had been spent on research in the last four years.
He said, “In the last four years, we have invented electric cars, constructed a gas-fired crucible furnace, invented a rice destoning and coconut dehusking machine, a palm-kernel cracking and separation machine, a palm fruit digesting machine, a presser machine, a cassava grating machine and development of a surveillance drone.
The rector reiterated his commitment to ensuring that a graduating student of the polytechnic, Ogechi Okoroafor, who made a viral video on social media claiming that she graduated with help of God and her private parts was not victimised.
Arimanwa said, “The panel is still sitting. They are still on with their investigations. Once the report is ready, the world will know. But let me say that under my watch, no student of the polytechnic, including the girl, is victimised. I assure you that the right thing is done.”
