Many universities and colleges in China do not admit Nigerians. Of China’s about 3, 012 universities and colleges, 23 universities and colleges admit students of Nigerian origin, according to China Admissions, an online international students portal, based in China.
There are 6,845 Nigerian students studying in China as of 2019, and 512 of them are receiving scholarships from the Chinese government. Students are able to attend different Chinese institutions thanks to this grant.
“It can be hard for Chinese Universities to verify students’ applications from certain countries, thus there are restrictions from some countries such as Nigeria,” Shinibek Shynar, a Kazakhstani student who attended Beijing Language and Culture University said on the international students portal, China Admissions. “This is most likely not going to be the case forever, but for the time being, the situation remains the same.”

Despite the restrictions on access to China’s 3, 012 universities and colleges, there are stories of Nigerian students who have gone on to become successful in the world’s factory and most populous country of the world.
Aminu Ibrahim Hashim, arrived China in 2013 for undergraduate study in computer science, since 2015, he focused on building his network in China, and engaging in cross-border trade to Nigeria, in March of 2018, he formalised his operations and registered his company Afroraft business services ltd, a consultancy firm which specialises in providing services to companies seeking business opportunities in Africa,
Afroraft also engages in E-Commerce, and business development for African investors planning to kick-start a new business. Aminu is currently studying his Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) at the Guanghua School of Management of Peking University.
“It still seems like yesterday when I first stepped out of my first flight to China, at Beijing’s Capital international airport, setting foot in a country I had only seen through the eyes of Jackie Chen’s and Bruce Lee’s action-packed kung-fu movies. Little did I know this would be the starting point for a new chapter in my journey as an entrepreneur,” Hashim told China-Admissions, an online blog for information on all things admission for international students in China.
