The Muslims Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto chapter has lambasted the Students’ Union of the university following a circular the union issued on the just concluded Eid-ul Adha fest.

In a statement signed by the Ameer of MSSN, Mustaqeem Bin Malik and published on Adda-leel  pressboard on Monday, 10th July, the MSSN claimed that the Students’ Union is taking credit for what they have not done.

The trend of the contention was that the Students’ Union released a circular dated 28th June, highlighting the union’s efforts towards ensuring that the Muslim’s students at the university had a remarkable Eid-ul Adha fest.

“The Union wants to also inform its Muslim members that in bid of enhancing their welfare, the union has contacted the school management and made sure there will be special food incentive to be shared after Eid prayer, and the union jointly with the school management handed over this program to the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) as the best Islamic organ of student union,” part of the circular reads.

However, the Muslim body publicly came out and condemned the claim of the SU, adding that the act is ‘callousness and deception.”

The SU circular

Titled ‘REJOINDER: STUDENTS’ UNION DECEPTION AMIDST EID-ADHA FEST,’ the Ameer said in the statement that the memo released by SU is “defaming, hypocritical and deceptive.”

I am actually writing this piece with uttermost dismay and shock toward the actions of the Students’ Union, Usmanu Danfodiyo  University, Sokoto.

“This memo released by them is defaming, hypocritical and deceptive.”

“How on earth will you want to take credit for what you did not do? The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Branch under my leadership, organized a gigantic Sallah fest for the students on campus amidst Eid-el Adha.”

The Ameer said the association slaughtered 2 cows, and prepared special delicacies. However, he was taken aback by the actions of the SU.

Therefore,”To clear the air, we the MSSN are not puppets of the Students’ Union, neither are we an organ of the union. We are an “independent organization”, and all Muslim students on campus are our subjects whether they are members of the Students Union leadership or otherwise.

The MSSN statement

“In a bid to see that all that was done came to reality, we went through a lot of struggles. Though the School management gave us a cow and a token for the celebration, we actually had the “larger share” of all the expenses used for the occasion.”

“For your information, that has always been the tradition of the School authority. The donation made was from the school, and not from the Students Union, not even as a result of any effort from them.”

“It is actually disheartening that the leadership of the Students’ Union who called me a day before the occasion requesting to help join hands to share the meal and goodies to the Students on that day just because they wish to gain recognition and fame, which I outrightly refuted, and told them it’s not in anyway possible because it’s just a typical of “Monkey dey work, Baboon dey chop.”

“How would you wish to partake and share the credit, when you have not contributed a “dime”, neither your time nor energy and resources towards seeing the event was a successful one.”

“I even doubt, if they had any preparation on ground, but then they were foolish and shameful to have wanted seizing the opportunity into making a name for themselves on the basis of deception and hypocrisy.”

“This is a most condemnable act, and any responsible individual or organization will  act of “callousness and deception!”

Meanwhile, when Edugist reached out to the General Secretary of SU, Sodiq Olaniyan, he directed this outlet to the president for clarification.

“Contact the president for more clarification,” he said.

But as of the time of filing this report, Edugist could not reach the president.  All the calls placed to him were unreachable.
