The Lagos State branch of the University of Lagos Alumni Association has launched a three-month technology programme called the ‘GOS Up-skilled Initiative.’ The programme focuses on various areas such as product design, data analytics, web development, graphic design, and digital marketing, targeting students of the university. The opening ceremony of the program was held at Afe Babalola Hall on Tuesday.
During the event, Senator Olarewaju Solomon Ganiyu, a prominent sponsor, emphasised the importance of giving back to the university for the Alumni. He also encouraged the participants of the training to make the most of the opportunity provided to them. Senator Ganiyu expressed his gratitude to the Alumni association for their efforts and stressed the significance of external support in enhancing educational institutions.
Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, applauded the Alumni body and urged students to acquire technological skills as they are crucial for the future. She emphasised that technology is increasingly shaping various aspects of life, and individuals who lack technological proficiency may face challenges ahead. Professor Ogunsola specifically highlighted the relevance of topics such as digital analysis and data generation in today’s world, considering them as future job prospects.
The Chairman of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Lagos branch, emphasised the growing importance of technology in the world and its impact on society. He mentioned that the association’s involvement in the training programme aims to prepare students for the evolving technological landscape. The students were encouraged to actively participate in the classes, as their progress would be evaluated, and certificates would be awarded upon completion.
Dimeji Lamiu, the Social Secretary of the Alumni Association, expressed their commitment to supporting the university and the Vice Chancellor. Lamiu reiterated that the initiative was a means of giving back to their alma mater and affirmed their ongoing dedication to assist the institution.
In addition to the training programme, the Alumni Association also announced that they would sponsor three UNILAG students to represent Nigeria in the World University Game, further highlighting their commitment to supporting the university and its students.
