In a significant event held at the Presidential Villa this week , the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, inaugurated the new board and management of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC).
During his address, Shettima placed a strong emphasis on the importance of prioritising access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities within the North-East region, stressing that “true development transcends physical infrastructure.”
Shettima, recognising the essence of human capital development, stated that “progress encompasses empowering individuals, nurturing talent, and creating an environment conducive to the growth of aspirations.”
He asserted that the commission’s role in safeguarding future generations lies in nurturing the foundational elements that give rise to them.
Highlighting the significance of this moment, Shettima articulated that the inauguration holds deeper significance beyond political protocol.
He referred to it as a rejuvenation of national hope, the establishment of a legacy, and a testament to the dedication of the administration in fostering the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North-East region.
The vice-president credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the human capital and development trajectory of the North-East as a driving force behind the administration’s prioritisation of the NEDC’s affairs.
Shettima also expressed admiration for the achievements of the outgoing board, praising their fiscal discipline and financial transparency.
He revealed that the commission’s commendable management has resulted in an impressive credit balance of N222.9 billion in the second quarter of 2023.
Urging the new board members, Shettima called upon them to fulfill their commitment to preventing shortcomings in interventions and offering the people an escape from challenging realities. He urged them to restore the historical, cultural, and industrial splendor of the North-East.
Shettima appealed for unity among leaders and residents of the North-East region, asserting that this transformative journey necessitates collaboration and a shared sense of purpose.
Paul Tarfa, the chairman of the NEDC board, extended gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for entrusting them with the responsibility to serve. He assured that the new board’s focus will align with the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” placing a strong emphasis on implementing projects that uplift human capital development.
Among the dignitaries present at the event were Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum; NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia; and other prominent figures.
The presence of these esteemed individuals added further significance to the occasion, highlighting the collective commitment towards fostering regional transformation and prosperity.
