In light of the looming nationwide strike announced by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which is set to commence indefinitely from Monday, June 3, 2024, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates will proceed as scheduled.

The announcement from WAEC follows concerns that the strike, driven by widespread socio-economic grievances, might disrupt the critical examination period for thousands of Nigerian students.

WAEC emphasised that the WASSCE is being conducted across various member countries, and Nigerian candidates must not be placed at a disadvantage by missing these crucial exams.

Mrs. T.O. Danjuma, the Senior Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja, highlighted the importance of maintaining the examination schedule despite the strike.

“While we empathise with the unions and understand the broader concerns of Nigerians, it is imperative that the WASSCE proceeds uninterrupted,” she stated.

“We urge the Ministry of Education, school principals, supervisors, parents, and the general public to make the necessary arrangements to ensure that candidates can sit for their exams.”

WAEC calls for the cooperation of all stakeholders to facilitate the smooth conduct of the examinations during this challenging period.

The Council stresses the significance of these exams in the academic futures of Nigerian students and seeks collective efforts to mitigate any potential disruptions caused by the strike.
