The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has been plunged into mourning following the tragic discovery of a first-year student’s lifeless body in a campus drainage on Friday, July 5.
The deceased, identified as Favour Okenyi, was a student from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science.
The grim discovery was made near Akanu Ibiam Stadium, a location that has now become synonymous with sorrow for the UNN community.
The acting Public Relations Officer, Chief Okwun Omeaku, confirmed the heartbreaking incident in a statement released on Sunday.
“The University of Nigeria Nsukka is in a state of shock following the untimely death of one of our first-year students. This is a deeply unfortunate incident that has left the entire university community grieving,” said Omeaku.
Omeaku also called on the public for any information that could aid in the investigation and help bring the perpetrators to justice. “We appeal for useful information that will assist in the investigations and help identify those responsible for this heinous act,” he urged.
The statement extended condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of the institution’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind this tragic event.
“The university administration is collaborating closely with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death. Our aim is to prevent any recurrence of such a tragic incident,” the statement added.
The UNN community has been deeply affected by this loss, and the administration is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of its students.
“The safety of our students is paramount, and we will do everything in our power to prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” Omeaku emphasised.
