The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has mandated the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for all candidates applying to tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
This requirement extends specifically to those seeking admission under non-regular categories, including the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Distance Learning, Part-time, and Sandwich programmes.**
Announcing this new directive, JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, emphasized that the initiative aims to curb fraudulent activities and ensure the authenticity of candidates’ records. His statement, released in Abuja on Monday, highlighted the increasing attempts by unscrupulous individuals to compromise candidates’ information through dubious registration channels.
“This Advisory is issued to all concerned institutions and candidates desirous of applying to study under the non-regular mode of study in tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” said JAMB spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin.
“As part of measures to checkmate the nefarious activities of fraudulent characters and in compliance with its enabling act, JAMB has mandated that all applicants must provide their NIN while registering for any programme of study.”
To comply with this new policy, prospective candidates in the non-regular category must create a profile code by sending their NIN through their unique phone number to either of JAMB’s sort codes (55019 or 66019).
Following the creation of the profile, candidates are required to complete their registration at a Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre. The candidates’ details will then be uploaded to the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) of their chosen institution for further processing.
“Immediately after the creation of profile, each candidate will proceed to a CBT Centre for registration. After registration, the candidate’s details will appear on the CAPS of the institution of choice under non-regular admission,” Benjamin explained.
The institution will then propose and recommend the candidate for approval, allowing the candidate to accept and print their admission letter.
Additionally, previous candidates in non-regular programmes who have not yet integrated their NIN or unique phone number on JAMB’s platform must create a profile using their respective NINs to access any of JAMB’s services. This process ensures that no candidate can alter the data already supplied to the Board.
“JAMB, as a responsive organisation, will continue to make the registration process as flexible as possible by making its platform available throughout the year,” the statement read.
“Candidates falling under this category are expected to apply through JAMB before approaching their preferred institutions with their respective JAMB registration numbers.”
Candidates will also be required to pay a processing fee to their preferred institutions, as determined by those institutions.
