Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, located in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area, has achieved National and West Africa accreditation for surgery, marking a significant advancement in the medical field.

Meanwhile Governor Oborevwori has approved the appointment of Prof. Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba as the new Vice Chancellor of the Delta State University, Abraka.

The hospital is actively pursuing accreditation for Internal Medicine, Radiology, Community Medicine, and other areas as well.

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the State Commissioner for Health, revealed this information following a meeting with the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, key officials of the teaching hospital, and the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Asaba on Tuesday.

The Commissioner said: “The leadership of Hospital Management and that of Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, DELSUTH actually came to appreciate the governor for the works he has done so far in the hospital.

“You know that a month ago, the governor approved purchase of CT-scan for the hospital; though they requested for more equipment to make the place habitable for staff and patients.

“Governor Oborevwori has also agreed to do more in terms of the Eco-cardiography and even the MRI. He has also assured to make those things available within the quickest possible time.

“Before now, the accreditation for the various departments in the hospital was basically reliant on the state government. But currently, the internally generated revenue for the hospital has increased.

“Two weeks ago, the hospital got accreditation for National and West Africa for Surgery Department and in the nearest possible time, they will get accreditation for some other departments in the hospital.

“Currently they are working on the Radiology department, the Dental department, Internal Medicine and some other ones.”

In their remarks, Acting CMD of the hospital, Dr. Awunor Nyemike, Acting MDCAN Chairman, DELSUTH Oghara, Prof. Jude Uchendu and State Chairman Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Israel Adaigho, commended governor Oborevwori for his disposition to improve the fortunes of the hospital.

According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Eze Emu on Tuesday, the appointment takes effect from December 1, 2024.

A Professor of Environmental Biochemistry and Toxicology, Prof. Asagba had previously served the University in various capacities, including serving as Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration as well as Provost of the defunct Asaba Campus.
