Bowen University, Iwo,has inducted 45 new medical laboratory scientists in a ceremony that highlighted the profession’s crucial role in modern healthcare. Vice-Chancellor Professor Jonathan O. Babalola praised the inductees, revealing that 21 out of the 45 had passed their council exams with distinction.
“You must uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethics in your practice,” Babalola urged the new inductees. “Your role is vital to the country’s healthcare, and your continued education is key to staying relevant in the field.”
The induction lecture, delivered by Prof. Kolawole S. Oyedeji from the University of Lagos, emphasized the integral role of medical laboratory scientists in diagnosing and treating diseases. “Medical laboratory science is the foundation of modern medicine, informing up to 70% of healthcare decisions,” Oyedeji said. “Your work ensures accurate, reproducible results that directly impact patient care and treatment.”
Highlighting the importance of ethical standards, he added, “As medical laboratory scientists, maintaining emotional balance, confidentiality, and professionalism is essential for maintaining trust in the healthcare system.”
The event also featured the oath-taking ceremony, led by Dr. Gregory Uchonu, representing the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria. Awards were presented to outstanding students, including Oghenedoro Godswill Avbunufe, who was named the overall best-graduating student and received a ₦100,000 cash prize from the council.
Honoring those who contributed to the development of medical laboratory science, the ceremony also recognized Hon. Kunle Jenrade and Mr. Kehinde Ogunkoya for their long-standing dedication to the profession.
